- 3 cups whole wheat flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon instant yeast
- 1 1/4 cups lukewarm water
- In a large bowl, mix together the flour, salt, sugar, and yeast.
- Add the water and mix until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough for 10 minutes until it is smooth and elastic.
- Cover with a damp towel and let rise for 1 hour.
- Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces and form each piece into a ball.
- Let rest for 10 minutes.
- Flatten each ball into a disc shape.
- Poke a hole in the center of each disc with your finger and stretch it to form a bagel shape.
- Place bagels on a lightly greased baking sheet and let rest for 30 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).
- Boil 2 quarts of water in a large pot.
- Add 2 tablespoons of sugar to the boiling water and stir to dissolve.
- Place 3-4 bagels at a time in the boiling water for 30 seconds on each side.
- Remove from boiling water with slotted spoon and place back on baking sheet. Sprinkle with desired toppings (optional).
- Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown. Enjoy!
