Whole Wheat Bagels
Ingredients
  • 3 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon instant yeast
  • 1 1/4 cups lukewarm water

Steps
  1. In a large bowl, mix together the flour, salt, sugar, and yeast.
  2. Add the water and mix until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough for 10 minutes until it is smooth and elastic.
  4. Cover with a damp towel and let rise for 1 hour.
  5. Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces and form each piece into a ball.
  6. Let rest for 10 minutes.
  7. Flatten each ball into a disc shape.
  8. Poke a hole in the center of each disc with your finger and stretch it to form a bagel shape.
  9. Place bagels on a lightly greased baking sheet and let rest for 30 minutes.
  10. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).
  11. Boil 2 quarts of water in a large pot.
  12. Add 2 tablespoons of sugar to the boiling water and stir to dissolve.
  13. Place 3-4 bagels at a time in the boiling water for 30 seconds on each side.
  14. Remove from boiling water with slotted spoon and place back on baking sheet. Sprinkle with desired toppings (optional).
  15. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown. Enjoy!
