In a large bowl, dissolve the sugar and salt in the warm water. Sprinkle the yeast over the top and let stand for 5 minutes. Stir until combined.
Add the flour and stir until dough forms a ball. Knead dough on a lightly floured surface for about 10 minutes. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise for 1 hour.
Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
Divide dough into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a rope about 20 inches long and shape into pretzels.
Place pretzels on prepared baking sheets. Bake in preheated oven for 12 to 15 minutes or until golden brown.
