- 1 lb. breakfast sausage
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 3 cups milk
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon ground pepper
- 8 cups cubed French bread
- 2 cups shredded Cheddar cheese
- Preheat oven to 375°F. Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
- In a large skillet over medium heat, cook sausage until no longer pink. Drain fat.
- Sprinkle flour over sausage and stir to combine. Cook for 1 minute.
- Slowly pour in milk while stirring constantly.
- Bring mixture to a boil then reduce heat to low and simmer for 5 minutes or until thickened.
- Add salt and pepper. Remove from heat and set aside.
- In prepared baking dish, layer half of the bread cubes, half of the sausage gravy and half of the cheese.
- Repeat layering process with remaining bread cubes, gravy and cheese.
- Bake casserole for 30 minutes or until golden brown on top.
- Let cool for 10 minutes before serving.
