Ingredients
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/3 cup cold butter, cubed
  • 2 tablespoons poppy seeds
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten
  • 1/3 cup buttermilk or sour cream (or plain yogurt)

Steps
  1. Preheat oven to 400°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt.
  3. Cut in the butter until it resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in the poppy seeds.
  4. In a small bowl, whisk together the egg, buttermilk or sour cream (or yogurt). Add to the dry ingredients and mix until just combined.
  5. Turn out onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently 4-5 times. Pat into an 8-inch circle about 1 inch thick. Cut into 8 wedges and place on prepared baking sheet.
  6. Bake in preheated oven for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown. Serve warm.
