- 4 ounces German sweet chocolate
- 1/2 cup butter
- 2 cups sugar
- 4 eggs, separated
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup buttermilk
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour a 9x13 inch pan.
- Melt the chocolate and butter in a double boiler over low heat. Remove from heat and stir in the sugar.
- Beat egg yolks until light and fluffy. Stir in the melted chocolate mixture, vanilla extract, and almond extract.
- In a separate bowl, sift together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Gradually stir into the chocolate mixture.
- Beat egg whites until stiff peaks form. Fold into the batter.
- Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake for 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.
- Allow cake to cool before frosting with German Chocolate Frosting.
