Ingredients
  • 4 ounces German sweet chocolate
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 4 eggs, separated
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk

Steps
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour a 9x13 inch pan.
  2. Melt the chocolate and butter in a double boiler over low heat. Remove from heat and stir in the sugar.
  3. Beat egg yolks until light and fluffy. Stir in the melted chocolate mixture, vanilla extract, and almond extract.
  4. In a separate bowl, sift together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Gradually stir into the chocolate mixture.
  5. Beat egg whites until stiff peaks form. Fold into the batter.
  6. Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake for 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.
  7. Allow cake to cool before frosting with German Chocolate Frosting.
