In a large pot over medium heat, add the lentils, onion, garlic, ginger, curry powder and garam masala. Cook for 5 minutes until the vegetables are softened.
Add the broth or water and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 15-20 minutes until the lentils are cooked through.
Stir in the coconut milk and cook for an additional 5 minutes. Serve warm with rice or naan.
Optional: Garnish with chopped cilantro before serving.
