In a large bowl, dissolve the sugar in the warm water. Sprinkle the yeast over the top and let it sit for 10 minutes until it is foamy.
Add the salt, butter and 2 cups of the flour. Stir until combined.
Add the remaining flour, 1 cup at a time, stirring after each addition. The dough should be soft but not sticky. Knead for about 5 minutes until smooth.
Cover with a damp towel and let rise for about 1 hour.
Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
Divide dough into 12 equal pieces and roll each piece into a rope about 12 inches long. Twist each rope into a pretzel shape and place on prepared baking sheets.
Brush with melted butter and sprinkle with garlic powder and Parmesan cheese.
